Jernih
Seeking the true values of the Peranakan culture, the project aims to challenge us into interpreting the researched value into a desktop object. The object should have relevant references to avoid direct culture translation as the Peranakan culture is formed from the assimilation of various cultures.
Process journal
Jernih
Jernih was designed to appreciate the growth of women in the Peranakan family. Using celadon as its base material and complementing it with a crepe paper peony, it shows the process of how Nyonyas ascend.
The peony was being personified as the Nyonyas, while the water is the medium which blooms the peony. This is a significant process as the water is being associated with purity, wisdom and fertility. These are also the values which are usually expected from an ideal Nyonya in the family for them to be able to grow into a wise matriarch to support the household. It similarly also interpret that the process they went through, was to allow her to ascend and grow into a woman of respect.
The ware was also being designed as a shallow display to interpret the preciousness of the ladies’ education in the Peranakan household.
