The goal of the project was to design a multi-sensorial printer using our conceptualisation skillset.

Phase one of the project required us to work in teams of three to identify the printer concept we wish to conceptualise. Working along with 2 other designers, Jun Heng and Wazi, we managed to think beyond what existing printer does and proposed the following three concepts during our interim session.

Concept 1: A printer is a device that produces scent experience by pouring essential oil

Concept 2: A printer is a device that produces age by spraying and pressing

Concept 3: A printer is a device that produces a sound wave transcript by tapping

Phase two of the project required us to make a proof of concept to ensure what was visioned can be carried out in reality.

"A printer is a device that produces a scent experience from pouring of essential oil."

We noticed how people lack exposure to nature. By pouring the essential oil from the top it enables duplication to happen. The same scent will be printed onto subsequent discs in sequence. We chose wood with a lower porosity as it is a good absorber and dispenser for the scent. While using lavender as the main scent for the essential oil to flow down naturally. Each disc was also being designed with a context in mind.

Phase three of the project required us to reconsider the form design of the concept individually. From the choice of material, size to the finishing of the product, it challenges us to rethink about what would suit the proposed concept the best.

Phase four of the project required us to prototype our proposed printer using a 1:1 scale with the material to details.
