Verdure
A window that embraces the totality of the existing HDBs, through using nature as a primary medium. It enhances the mundane appearance of the urban living spaces in Singapore.
Background
The platform focuses on discovering & analysing the problematic situations in our daily life. It focuses on developing our acute sense of detail and observing our surroundings to come up with creative solutions to change either societal behaviours, mindsets and even lifestyle patterns.
Windows & Engagement
Over the commencement of the project, we started our design journey by observing users’ habits. We found the most resonance in Windows, as our observations have shown us how frequent users subconsciously look at the change of weather, deciding to either open up or close up windows manually depending on the weather conditions. This piqued our interest in wanting to find out what exactly are their source of motivations, and what would be some opportunities that would enhance their existing experiences further.
Types of Engagement
We went on to briefly find out what are some of their engagement with the windows on a daily basis. Here are some insightful findings:
1
Opening window for ventilation throughout the day/night
Practicality
○ To dry wet clothes or towel.
○ Constant ventilation.
○ To provide natural sunlight during the day and cooling wind at the night in which is eco-friendly.
2
Subconscious habits of looking out as 'pockets of breaks' as moment of solitude
Breaks & Privacy
○ Sense of personal space & segregations.
Locations
○ Office, Communal spaces, Toilet, Hospitals.
3
Sensorial approach; Visual sense of telling time
Evoke Senses
○ Staying more in touch with surrounding.
○ To tell time and predict weather based on sight, scent and temperature.
○ Visually make the room feel more spacious & airy.
User Research | Primary Research
We conducted a quantitatively focused survey to find out existing user gaps, pain-points and motivations in terms of their experiences with the windows.
The Pivot
We took a more explorative turn, instead of viewing windows as it is, we redefined them to the extensive frame our apartment corridor provides. This challenged us to rethink what windows within the apartment could potentially transform into.
Ideation | Early Stages
Through our early ideation, we wanted to create pockets of engagement users can have with the greenery, improve the cognitive function, and foster rooms for conversations within the co-shared corridor. We explored a series of modular systems, pots and ergonomics possibilities this concept can have.

Final Design
How might we design for new interactions that embrace the totality of the building façade through the use of nature?
Design Highlights 1
Rationally, Verdure is a steel structure designed with plant vessels made of recycled plastic bits. They are light, modular and low-cost allowing users to create their very own greenery facade.
Modularity of structure for plant vessels
Configured to fit a variety of plants
Design Highlights 2
Ecologically, Verdure re-appropriates the environment with 3 factors:
• Purification of space through curated plants.
• Act as a natural filter for the sun and provide subtle yet soft shadows.
• Creating a comfortable environment for meaningful communication to happen between the old and the young.
Design Highlights 3
Pedagogically, Verdure allows users to learn more about greenery through its mobile application.
